Food & Drink

Christian and I like to think we are foodies. I love experimenting in the kitchen (with mixed results) and we love dining out too. When we eat out, we hope to make it count. Here are my thoughts on some of the eateries in the region we’ve tried on several occasions. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Hopefully, you’ll find my comments useful and above all else, you’ll have a great culinary experience. I would recommend in all cases you book ahead to avoid disappointment. Bon Appetit. Victoria

The Hotham Arms, Hotham. YO43 4UD (half a mile)

Landlord Joe Parkinson you could describe as being a very interesting character. The Hotham Arms is extremely popular in the area, has a great atmosphere and the food is hearty. His specialities are: fantastic steaks, homemade fishcakes (to die for) and beef stroganoff. Be sure to book early. Even on cold, dark winter evenings, Joe makes the place very welcoming with big open log fires.

Looking for somewhere smart to eat, with someone special, and a city vibe to boot, then this restaurant has to be a winner. The food is superb. I ate the best crab dish I’ve ever tasted at 1884 and it was followed by the most delicate and delicious tarte tatin I’ve ever had the fortune to try. Ensure you book ahead, this place is popular.

Winteringham fields, 1 Silver Street, Winteringham, Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, dn15 9ND (20 miles – 30 mins by car)

We think Colin McGurran Chef and owner of Winteringham Fields is one very very talented man. Why? Because we’ve tasted his brilliance first hand on a plate and he most certainly delivers with flavours. We can’t recommend WF highly enough, this restaurant experience will knock your socks off. The tasting menus are to die for, be sure to choose the legendary tomato dish and if you are a ‘grand fromage‘ lover, then you’ll find yourself in heaven with Colin’s incredible cheeseboard. Life’s for living.
